ASP stands for Active Server Pages. These are the web pages which contain the server side scripts in addition to the general mixture of HTML tags and text. Server side scripts are some special commands which are put in the web pages that are processed before the web pages are sent from your personal web server to the web browser of the user who is trying to visit your website. When a user types the URL in the address box or clicks on some link available on the web page, the user is basically requesting a Web hosting server to send a file to the demanding web browser (also known as client) on the user’s computer. If the demanded file is a simple HTML file it would look exactly as it did before the web hosting server sent it. The receiving web browser then displays all its contents as the combination of sound and text images.
In case of ASP, the process is very similar as discussed above except that there is an extra processing step which takes place just before the web server sends the file. The extra step would be processing of all the server side scripts contained in the page before the web server sends the ASP to the Web browser.
The Active Server Pages are saved using the extension “.asp”.
